THERE CAN BE NO SOLUTIONS TO GLOBAL PROBLEMS WITHOUT LATIN AMERICA': KING FELIPE VI

“Latin America is more than natural resources or a suitable geostrategic ally,” said King Felipe VI on Thursday, September 28. For the monarch, the countries of this regional space are, rather, protagonists of successful solutions to global problems.

The declarations of the King of Spain took place during the inauguration of the V Forum La Toja – Vínculo Atlántico. It is an academic meeting with 44 specialists from both sides of the ocean who debate and present on the topics of greatest intercontinental and global interest.

For Felipe VI, “Latin America is, above all, a valuable, but still little known and exploited, protagonist of successful solutions to problems such as poverty, inequality or macroeconomic stability and energy transition”.

“There is much to learn from them and with them,” said the King, who also stressed that, with Latin America, Europe shares history and also the future.

“There can be no solutions to global problems such as inequality, the erosion of democracy or the fight against environmental degradation or the consequences of climate change without counting on them, without including them in the global conversation on issues that today concern us all,” he said in his speech.

The words of the Spanish monarch can be heard in this video.

THE MAIN THEMES OF THE 5TH LA TOJA FORUM

The geopolitical reconfiguration of the world, the slowdown of globalization and freedom of expression are the three main themes of the 12 debates and exhibitions taking place on the island of La Toja, O Grove, Pontevedra, Spain. The general theme of the meeting is “A more uncertain world”. It will last until Saturday, September 30.

On the new international scenario, the specialists will discuss the configuration of two world blocks, led by the USA and China, with different visions of democracy and the multilateral world order.

With regard to globalization, the evolution of international trade and the risks it faces in the new geostrategic situation will be analyzed. There will also be reflections on the growing importance of data and artificial intelligence in economic and business life.

This year’s La Toja Forum will also reflect on the challenges to the principle of freedom of expression.

The Forum was born in 2019, thanks, in particular, to the efforts of its founder Josep Piqué, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain. This will be the first meeting without his presence, due to his death in April 2023. The forum’s annual award has been renamed in his honor.

A jury has unanimously decided to award this year’s “Josep Piqué – La Toja Forum Award” to Afghan women. King Felipe VI presented the award to Sunita Nasir Tareen, president of the Association of Afghan Women in Spain.

HOW TO FOLLOW THE DISCUSSIONS?

The experts’ presentations are held at the Gran Hotel La Toja Convention Center, and can be viewed through the forum’s website: www.forolatoja.com. It also contains details of the agenda of topics and the specialists who deal with them.
