EUROPEAN LEADERS TO MEET IN GRANADA ON OCTOBER 5 AND 6

The third meeting of the European Political Community will bring together leaders from across the continent in Granada (Spain) on October 5. The informal meeting of heads of state or government will take place on the 6th, in the same city. There, EU leaders will begin discussing the EU’s priorities for the coming years.

La Moncloa has released some details of the double meeting, which will be attended by 50 European leaders. They pointed out that this is a key moment for heads and presidents of government to meet to discuss decisive decisions for the future of Europe.

The summit will be attended by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the Council, Charles Michel, the President of the Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell. The focus will be on the debate on geopolitical conflicts in Europe.

The opening plenary will be followed by three round tables. The first will address digitalization; a second roundtable will deal with energy, environment and ecological transition; and the last will address mutilateralism and geostrategy. Following these open discussions, there will be a space for bilateral meetings between European leaders as will be the case between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

This will be followed by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, together with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunal, and the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

As for the informal meeting of EU heads of state or government on the 6th, the European leaders will work to set the EU’s priorities for action. Moncloa has explained that it is working on a declaration covering enlargement, open strategic autonomy and immigration, among other issues.

Although for security reasons it is not known whether the President of Ukraine, Volodymir Zelenski, will travel to Grenada, the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo have been confirmed.
